Cedarhurst’s story begins long before it became the bustling suburban haven it is today. Originally known as Ocean Point, the area was inhabited before the American Revolution. During the War of Independence, British troops occupied much of the land here — a testament to its strategic location and early colonial roots.

In the latter half of the 19th century, the extension of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) brought new residents and visitors, transforming the area from a quiet landscape into a developing community. In 1884, a local post office was established, and four years later the area was renamed Cedarhurst — a name inspired by the grove of cedar trees that once stood near the post office.

The village officially incorporated on September 16, 1910, laying the foundation for a governance structure that has grown with the community over more than a century. From its early days as a scenic rail‑linked destination to its present status as part of Long Island’s beloved “Five Towns,” Cedarhurst’s historical evolution reflects both local pride and regional significance.

Cedarhurst is one of the five communities that make up the famed Five Towns area — an informal grouping that also includes Lawrence, Woodmere, Inwood, and The Hewletts (Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, and the hamlet of Hewlett). While the name “Five Towns” dates back to local civic efforts in the early 20th century, the area’s reputation for affluence, charm, and strong community ties has endured for decades.
